Reaping the Whirlwind: Creationism

More than an intellectual exercise, the question of origins affects a person's outlook on life. William Jennings Bryan knew this when he said to John Scopes, "You have no idea what a black and brutal thing this evolution is." (Reaping the Whirlwind, p. 225)
In his closing statement Bryan wrote, "If taken seriously and made the basis of a philosophy of life, [evolution] would eliminate love and carry man back to a struggle of tooth and claw." (Reaping the Whirlwind, p. 383)
During the trial, scientific experts gave eight proofs for evolution. These are listed in Appendix B in Reaping the Whirlwind with a repudiation for each one. These are:
  • Fossil Record
  • Rock Layers
  • Embryology
  • Blood Types
  • Vestigial Organs
  • Comparative Anatomy
  • Natural Selection
  • Pre-historic Men
